How to Become a Roxboro Police Officer

We offer three hiring options:

1)  Not certified and have no experience? We have you covered. We will pay you to attend basic law enforcement      training.  Starting salary $44,454 after graduation and upon being sworn as a LEO, salary increases to $49,014

2)  BLET Certified, with less than three years NC LEO experience? Starting salary, $49,014

3)  Experienced NC LEO with more than three years experience? You could be eligible for our lateral entry program with a starting salary at or above entry level pay, depending on qualifications and training.

Processing of police applications takes approximately three to five months.  Requirements and procedures have been established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the Roxboro Police Department.  To view the police department's hiring policy click here.

The following is a general progression of the application process and will indicate where a candidate is in the hiring process:

  1. Submit a City of Roxboro application for employment with all supplements.  A North Carolina Training and Standards Personal History Statement (F3) is required as part of the initial application process;
  2. Pre-screening of applications for disqualifying offenses or conduct;
  3. Phone Interview.
  4. Selected applicants proceed to oral board phase;
  5. Oral board and panel interview;
  6. Entry level written and physical agility testing will be conducted;
  7. Comprehensive Background Investigation;
  8. Extension of conditional offer for qualified applicants and
  9. Physical examination, psychological fitness testing and drug screening.

Training & Experience

All applicants must be a high school graduate or have successfully completed a General Education Development (GED) program; however, applicants with advanced degrees are highly desired.

Preference is given to applicants who possess a valid law enforcement certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or enrolled in a North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) course in order to be considered for employment.

The city offers a paid trainee program to attend a local BLET for non-certified applicants.  Selection is based on highly qualified, competent applicants who have successfully completed every phase of the hiring process.  Selected applicants for trainee must meet additional employment requirements.

 Additions to Salaries

  • Bilingual Incentive Pay, per city policy, $60/weekly stipend ($1,560 annually) 
  • Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate is a $500 increase to the base salary
  • Education incentive increase to the base salary, degree must be job related:
    Associate degree $500, Bachelor degree $1,000, Master degree $1,500
  • Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) as approved by City Council annually on July 1.
  • Annual Merit Increases
