You may have noticed signage at local retailers about the penny shortage. As of early 2026, the U.S. Mint has ceased production of new pennies, leading to significant shortages in circulation. While billions of pennies remain in circulation as legal tender, reduced handling by the Federal Reserve is causing localized shortages, forcing businesses to adjust cash transactions, or urge customers to use exact change or electronic payments. The above notice to customers is now visible at City Hall, shared on our social media, and will be included in your next billing cycle.
