Training Lab

It is the duty of all fire departments to save lives and reduce property loss when fires occur. Fire fighting demands the quick and effective application of developed skills within a critical time frame. To insure that the fire department performs its duty quickly and effectively, we devote over 6,000 staff hours to training annually. Key elements of our training program include:

National Certification

Certification is administered through a joint effort through of the
NC Office of State Fire Marshal and the NC Community College System.
All personnel are expected to become certified at a basic IFSAC operational levels to include:

NFPA 1001: Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications
NFPA 472: Standard for Haz - Mat Responders Professional Qualifications.

Career Development

Career personnel are expected to complete the requirements of the departments career development program based upon their role within the organization or their long range career goals.


Maintenance Training


The degree of a member's knowledge is directly related to the quality, frequency, and thoroughness of exposure to a particular subject. The basis of any training program is the continuous professional growth and development of the department's personnel. Therefore, each member shall be required to complete the following requirements.


Complete company training requirements consisting of 20 hours for career personnel per month, or 9 hours for auxiliary personnel per month.

Successfully complete the minimum requirements for company and individual evolutions quarterly in March, June, September, and December.

Successfully complete the physical ability test on a bi-annual basis in May and November of each year.

Successfully complete OSHA training requirements and other ISO training requirements.
