Extinguishers


  Extinguishers have limits:
Know how to use extinguishers
Must be the right type, within easy reach, and in working order, fully charged
The operator must have a clear escape route that will not be blocked by fire
The extinguisher must be large enough to put out the fire


  Selecting Your Extinguisher
Class A - "Ordinary Combustibles" used on wood, rubber, cloth, paper, and plastic
Class B- "Flammable Combustibles" used on gasoline, oil, grease, tar, lacquer, and oil-based paints
Class C- "Electrical Combustibles" wiring, fuse boxes, breakers, machinery, and appliances
Class D- "Combustible Metals" used on industrial metals or metal dust.
  * Multipurpose, ABC extinguishers, may be used on all classes except class D fires

Remember the PASS-word

P- Pull pin

A- Aim low

S- Squeeze handle

S- Sweep side to side

Maintenance

Extinguishers require routine care. Periodically inspect extinguishers for damage such as corrosion, dents, or other signs of leaks. Read your operator's manual and always follow manufacturer's instructions.
