What is the property tax rate for Person County?

What is the $10.00 vehicle fee that appears on my property tax bill?
The State of North Carolina allows cities to charge a license or tag fee for each vehicle located in the City. In prior years, the City actually sold license plates for a fee. In recent years, this fee has been included with the property tax bills as a more efficient way to collect these fees. Citizens are no longer required to obtain a license plate from the City.
The funds collected are used to maintain City streets.

Where do I pay my property taxes?
Both City and County property taxes can be paid at the Person County Tax Office located on the first floor of the Person County Courthouse on Lamar Street. Payments can also be mailed to the following address:

Person County Tax Collector
P. O. Box 1701
Roxboro, NC 27573

When are property taxes due?
Property taxes are due and payable on September 1st of each year. However, late fees and interest are not charged until the following January 6th. To avoid interest and late fee, please pay your property taxes on or before January 5th. To deduct property taxes on your income tax returns for the current year, payments must be made by December 31.

When are property taxes on motor vehicles due?
Person County bills property taxes for motor vehicles on the first day of the fourth month after vehicles are registered with the Division of Motor Vehicles. Taxes are due by the end of the month in which they are billed. Failure to pay such taxes on time will result in the City or County blocking the renewal of vehicles registration for the following year. The DMV cannot renew the registration until property taxes on the vehicle are paid in full.

Where do I go to list my property?
You may list your property at the Person County Tax Office located on the first floor of the Person County Courthouse on Lamar Street. You do not have to list real estate that has already been listed in a previous year. Also, motor vehicles registered with the NC Division of Motor Vehicles are automatically listed by the Person County Tax Office from information provided by the DMV. You must list any improvements or additions to real estate, unregistered motor vehicles, boats, trailers, and business or farm equipment.

When are property tax listings due?
All property must be listed with the Person County Tax Office on or before January 31 of each year. A 10 percent late listing penalty is added to all property listed after this date.

How often is property revalued for property taxes?
Person County revalues all real property in the county every 4 years. The last revaluation was for the year 2005. The next revaluation will be in 2009.
